Specialized Maintenance: Nose Landing Gear Lock System

I’m excited to share a recent project focused on maintaining a critical component of the EMBRAER 110: the lock system under the nose landing gear.

Project Overview

The objective was to establish clear and effective procedures for maintaining the lock system, ensuring its optimal functionality and safety. The maintenance process was meticulously divided into two main parts:

  1. Lock Inspection and Adjustment
  2. Support Structure Inspection, Evaluation, and Repair

Findings and Actions

During the initial inspection, we identified that the structure had sustained damage. Specifically, there was an incident of involuntary unlocking of the nose gear on the EMB 110, attributed to the arching of the Lock Support Structure under the Nose Gear.

After further verification using a precise template and a thorough review of the technical bulletin, it was confirmed that the deformation exceeded the limits established in the technical guidelines.

Maintenance Steps

Initial Damage Assessment: The first step after detecting the damage was to carefully remove the rivets from the affected structures. This was done to prevent further damage and to allow for a detailed examination of the components.

Platform Realignment: The second step involved straightening the platform. This was a delicate process that required applying controlled force to return the platform to its original position, as specified in the technical bulletin.

Flatness Verification: Next, we verified the flatness of the platform using the template. This step was crucial to ensure that the platform no longer exhibited any warping or deformation. Once the flatness was confirmed, we proceeded with the necessary replacement services.

During our thorough inspection, we found that the reinforcement profiles showed no defects. Therefore, they did not require replacement, which streamlined the maintenance process and ensured cost-effectiveness.

Conclusion

By swiftly identifying and rectifying the structural issues, we ensured the continued safety and efficiency of the EMBRAER 110.

The success of this project underscores the importance of diligent maintenance and precise adherence to technical standards. It was a rewarding experience professionally, as it reinforced our capabilities in handling critical aircraft components and contributed significantly to the overall safety of flight operations.
